The January Strikes

Signs of the coming revolution started showing during the cold January of 1917 with a general strike involving thousands of railway workers. However, the strikes were not just about working conditions of the middle class: they also had a political angle. Over 100,000 workers and other members of the public held a demonstration to commemorate Bloody Sunday. However, most Russians did not take much notice of the event that would spiral into a full-fledged anti-tsarist movement in the coming months.

The January strikes were largely peaceful, save for a few clashes with the authorities here and there. Things would get worse in the coming days. The tsar had left St. Petersburg to join the soldiers on the front lines, and calls for his return fell on deaf ears. He was ignoring the protests on the basis of bad advice the tsarina sent him by mail; she remarked that the poor protesters were mere hooligans who had nothing to do and would probably stay at home if the cold weather got worse.
